Super Magic Hats: This Last Week
Super Magic Hats is a Melbourne-via-London based musician, beatmaker and producer whose work embraces melody, noise and experimentation. As an accomplished guitarist and bass player, live instrumentation makes its way into many Super Magic Hats tracks, while a love of the unusual leads to electronic gadgets such as Yamaha’s Tenori-On featuring prominently. Super Magic Hats also loves experimenting with a wide range of samples, including chopped up vocals, field recordings of streetscapes and everything in between. This sound is underpinned by interest in production trickery and effects, which washes intricate edits, delicately placed details and other sonic mutations with layers of reverb and delay.
Today’s featured track comes from ‘Slowly’, the 3rd EP following up from last year’s “Kumori” on Seattle’s Hush Hush Records. Slowly is a bright and bubbly collection of tracks that see Super Magic Hats exploring an upbeat, melodic and glitchy musical territory, loosely focused around the theme of falling in love. Slowly brings to the fore Super Magic Hats’ J-Pop influences and playful, Gold Panda-esque sample slicing, pairing this with a growing maturity as a producer.
Slowly is Super Magic Hats’ first collaboration with Japan’s Tanukinieri Records, a prolific and eclectic netlabel that has been listed by Pitchfork & MTV81, among others, as one of the essential labels in Japan right now.
