Estel: Running With Scissors
From their depressingly (yet delightfully tongue-in-cheek)-titled album My dreams are like rabbits, they built a tunnel, fell onto the pavement and died, this is Estel with ‘Running With Scissors’.
Dark, foreboding and a minor epic at just under 7 minutes long, today’s track from Dublin alternative rockers Estel will be just the thing to cast a wicked, slow-building shadow over your midweek slump. Entangled in a web of prog, instrumental post-rock and alternative, ‘Running With Scissors’ builds from a slow, grinding beginning up to an energetic flurry of fuzzed guitar and piano embellishments before collapsing in on itself for a slow grooving middle section, only to step it back into gear for the remaining few minutes in a furious mix of those crunching guitars and frantic Hammond organ. Its frenetic energy, changing pace and deliciously dark undertones will have you headbanging at your desk in no time. [Sarah Morrison]
