IR Orlando #1
Hey everybody! Welcome to the newest addition to the IR Family, Insomnia Radio Orlando. As a loyal listener of Jason’s original Insomnia Radio for about the last year or so, it’s really cool to be a part of it now!
I’m excited to bring you a weekly sampling of the best independent music from the Central Florida area. I have to say that I already knew there were a lot of great bands in Orlando or I wouldn’t be doing this podcast, but I’ve been amazed at the sheer volume of vibrant and varied music coming out of our little city. I hope you’ll go check these bands out, show them some love, try to catch their live shows and buy some music from them.
The Music
Derek Lyn Plastic
‘Invisible Skin’
‘Walk the Dead’
Florida’s Dying website/store
These guys have 3 7′ vinyl releases available at only 5 bucks each, postage paid. Their first one, Invisible Skin, is a 6 song EP pressed on clear red vinyl. Their brand new release, Methamphetamines, just came out and you can order it from them at their MySpace page or from the Florida’s Dying website. I’m a big fan of these guys.
StuMpP ‘Car Crash’
StuMpP Grindin’ at CD Baby
These guys were named UCF Band of the Year for 2006-2007. If you’re a regular listener of Insomnia Radio Florida, you heard Michael play this track a few episodes ago. Stumpp began as 2 separate acts – a funk rock jam band & a solo hip hop act. When they came together to play at a CD release party, they clicked so well that they decided to join forces. Their debut was an EP called Stump Grindin’ which you can get a CD Baby, and their forthcoming full-length CD is Stumppanomics. Check out their MySpace page for lots of upcoming shows.

New Roman Times ‘The Going Away Gift’
MySpace site
New Roman Times is one of my favorite Orlando bands. The founding members are husband and wife team Dan and Josie. This track is from their debut CD, ‘International Affairs’ which you can get at iTunes, Barnes & Noble.com, Tower Records.com, or Park Avenue CDs (if you live in Orlando). The caliber of this band is apparent from the list of bands they’ve supported – a short list includes Death Cab for Cutie, VHS or Beta, The Bravery, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, The Raveonettes and Centro-Matic. Listen in future episodes for tracks from their new ‘Brighter Days Darker Nights’ EP.
They are taking some time off to write new material, but they do have one upcoming gig:
>> Aug 1 @ Back Booth (w/Gasoline Heart and Mike Dunn & the Kings of New England), Orlando FL
Boutros Boutros ‘Falling Trees’
They describe their music as being ‘about love and longing, and trying to capture those first two weeks of a relationship within a three minute pop song.’
This track is from their debut EP ‘Love Goes On.’
I think they have a great sound and am looking forward to their next live show:
>> Aug 4 @ Back Booth, Orlando, FL
The Heathens ‘Stickin’ Around’
Post Records shop
The Heathens’ debut CD ‘Big White House’ just came out on July 3. You can order it from their MySpace page or from the Post Records website. It’s 10 bucks for 15 songs, and this record is what my friends and I call ‘wall to wall’ meaning every song is great – no filler!
They are doing a whirlwind East Coast/midwest tour right now, so try to catch their show if they play in your area.
Check their MySpace site for the most current dates and locations.

Marc with a C ‘Stuck With Me’
MySpace
Marc’s Store
This is one catchy song. Marc describes himself as a low-fi guy who loves the hum of a 4-track. He’s into podcasting as well and if you go to his website, marcwithac.com, you can find links to podcasts of some of his live performances. He also has a store there where you can buy his CD’s (there are 3 of those). His new one will be out in late August and it’s called ‘Life’s So Hard.’
>> Aug 4 @ Stardust, Winter Park, FL
>> Aug 26 @ Austin Coffee (record release show), Winter Park, FL

Rocket 88 ‘Rockabilly Hair’
MySpace
These guys are practically an Orlando institution. Formed in 1992, they are back from a lengthy hiatus with all of the original members. They have 2 full length CDs and an early EP available at their website. If you get a chance to catch their super high-energy show, don’t miss it!
