October 8, 2008

Hey everybody, it’s been way too long… I apologize that the show has not even been quarterly, let alone monthly this year. It’s been a very busy time, but I hope you will hang in there with me, and be as pleased as I am to hear some of this fantastic music coming out of the Orlando scene and beyond. I intend to keep bringing you best music I can get my hands on, and I hope you will stick with me for more shows in the future. Having said that, this is a landmark episode: #25! IR Orlando #23

December 20, 2007

Hey gang, we’re back for the final episode of 2007. I hope you’ve enjoyed the great music coming out of Florida in the past year, and I hope you’re as excited as I am about more great music in 2008. Happy holidays!

1. Timothy Simpson | Oceans (Lakeland, FL)
2. Timothy Simpson | The New Year
This is a new song from IR Orlando favorite Timothy Simpson. He has a bunch of new Snocap tracks on his MySpace page, available for purchase! Some exciting developments in the works for Timothy: he’s been told by his management company that 3 labels are negotiating to sign him. He also recently mentioned in a MySpace bulletin that he will be “playing a music festival in Austin, Texas in a few months” so keep an eye out for more details on that!
For more info about Timothy Simpson, check out this recent article.

3. Signo Nata | Levantate (Orlando, FL)
Signo Nata on MySpace
Their band name was derived from Latin and means “Birth Sign.” Their sound is a melting pot of musical characteristics from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s mixed with a dash of alternative rock in Spanish. Although they are bilingual (English/Spanish), most of their songs are in Spanish as a tribute to their cultural upbringing.

4. Rocket 88 | Supersonic Satellite (Orlando, FL)
Rocket 88 on MySpace
Catch Rocket 88 in Orlando at the Peacock Room on December 21 or at the Downtown Arts Center on December 28. If you can stand still at a Rocket 88 show, you can’t possibly have a pulse!

5. Christian Summer | Take Me Home (Deland, FL)
Christian has a solid following in the Central Florida area and recently played at the Anti-Pop Music Festival here in Orlando. You can download a bunch of his songs from his website. This one, “Take Me Home” is from his debut 2007 release “this is my music”
You can also buy his songs here for a mere 27¢ or the whole album for $3.

6. The OaKs | Masood (Orlando, FL)
The OaKs, another IR Orlando favorite, have spent the last few months in the studio, recording their 2nd album. This is the first single to emerge from those sessions. You can download it now at their MySpace page. The new album, “Songs For Waiting” will be released on March 4, 2008, but in the meantime, you can see them play on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Social (with S.K.I.P. and Kingsbury). They’ve also said that if you bring 3 friends to the show and introduce your friends to the band, you’ll receive a free copy of “Our Fathers and the Things They Left Behind” as a thank you from the band.
The band has also recently announced that they’ll be playing SXSW 2008, so look for them to play some tour dates on their way from Orlando to Austin.

IR Orlando #21

September 30, 2007

The forecast for episode 21 is slightly mellow for the most part with a touchy of twanginess…

Food Will Win the War

1. Food Will Win The War | Amassed Complications
Their CD, “Dark Mono 3,” is available for purchase at their MySpace page.
Food Will Win the War is based in New York City but is fronted by ex-Central Floridian Rob Ward.

2. The Sugar Oaks | Los Rebeldes
MySpace

As deeply rooted in the Florida soil as their namesake, The Sugar Oaks’ 5-song EP, “Red Grapes in the City,” is available now on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Sony Connect, and Digstation.

3. Terri Binion | Gayleanne (from the 2002 album “Fool” on Richter Records)
Terri has been writing and performing music for many years. You can often catch Terri Binion and the Bible Belt Orphans performing in the Orlando area. She also composed the score for the recent documentary “When Pigs Fly,” which has been making a big splash on the film festival circuit. High demand for the film here in Orlando resulted in a special encore screening and it was the buzz of The Florida Film Festival last spring. More on the film here.
From her MySpace page:
“‘Gayleanne’: Featuring Lucinda Williams, this is the song about a woman I met in Nashville married to an overbearing soul and so very tied to her dream of reaching stardom in a city brimming over with everyone else’s songs.”
BUY: Amazon, iTunes.

4. Go Van Gogh | The Clay We Mold Is New
This Panama City-based solo artist states on his MySpace bio that The Smashing Pumpkins, one of my all-time favorites, made him want to play music.

5. Cinwaves | Sophia
Deerfield Beach duo Cinwaves has released their debut CD. You can purchase Snocap tracks directly from their MySpace page for only 65 cents per song.

6. Shocking Edison | Paranormal Zoo
MySpace

7. mini-IR Baltimore: The Thrives | Fall Right Down
Harrisburg, PA
Thanks to Tim and Don for providing this mini-episode of IR Baltimore, featuring The Thrives.

8. Mumpsy | 64 Colors
(from “3 People” on Post*Records)
Long-standing IR Orlando favorite Mumpsy was recently voted 3rd place in the “Best Rock/ Pop Act” category and voted 2nd place in the “Best Indie Rock Act” category of the Orlando Weekly!

9. Recliner NZ | Ugly
Not to be confused with the San Francisco-based band of the same name, this Recliner hails from Auckland, New Zealand. They formed in 2004 and their debut album “Rest Room” was released in New Zealand in 2006 to glowing reviews.
As a result of some very enthusiastic reviews from GarageBand.com members, “Ugly” was Track of the Day at GarageBand.com. For 24 hours on Saturday, the 1st of September, 2007 “Ugly” it was featured on GarageBand.com’s Alternative Pop front page.

June 24, 2007

Hello and welcome to yet another episode of Insomnia Radio Orlando. This episode features some olds friends and some new ones, starting with…

1. Four Star Riot | Still My Girl
(Clearwater, Fl)
This song is from their new 4th release, ‘Burn So Bright.’ In May they announced that they had just signed with a St. Pete-based indie upstart called RYS Records and plan to do a regional tour later this year. Check their website for lots and lots of upcoming Tampa-area shows. You can buy Snocap tracks at their
MySpace page. Also check them out on VIRB!

2. The Monistats | Deflated
The Monistats formed in 1999 and call Gainesville, Florida home. You can see videos and purchase CDs directly from their MySpace page. This track is from their latest release, ‘Life Sucks’ available on Bony Orbit Records and at CD Baby.

3. Kerbslider | Looking For Hangnails
4. Kerbslider | Manufactured Me
Kerbslider is a rockin’ British band that I played back on episode 5, after they contacted me on MySpace and I put them in touch with IR:UK. They have since been played on loads of podcasts and their debut EP ‘Highs and Lows’ was awarded unsigned ‘Album of the Year’ by BBC Radio Suffolk. They have become good friends of mine and the rest of the Insomnia Radio family and have even plugged our shows in radio interviews. We’re all excited about their success, and in late June, Chewy, Garf, Ian and Bod will be making their U.S. debut. The first scheduled show is June 28 in
Morristown, Tennessee at The Downtown Club and if you are anywhere near Tennessee, don’t miss this chance to catch them!

IR Orlando #18: Spotlight on Spacebar

June 6, 2007

I originally played Spacebar way back on episode #4 last August, and several times since then. In the meantime, their debut full-length album, ‘Our Fight,’ has been completed and released. They are working on the video for ‘Things Change’ and the album will be hitting college radio on June 19. They are looking to chart on over 350 college radio stations around the country. They also recently signed on with a new manager, Major Bob, who discovered and still manages Garth Brooks. And to top it off, they just did a song called ‘Breathe the Air’ for the video game ‘Dance Dance Revolution 4′ by Konami.

Spacebar was founded in Jacksonville, Florida in 2003 by James Rowand (vocals, bass) and Arthur Hardie IV (lead guitar, keyboards). They relocated to Orlando in 2004 and picked up 2 more band members: Christian Wilson (no longer with the band) and Brandon Marsden (drums). Last year, Bill Hamel, a reknowned artist in his own right, joined the band to lend his electronic talents and beef up the rock with beats, keyboards, synths, loops and other assorted oddities. BT has referred to Hamel as ‘a shining star in a sea of faceless DJs and producers’ and Paul Oakenfold has called him one of his favorite re-mixers.

Spacebar’s ‘Our Fight’ is an accomplished debut, featuring 12 rock-solid songs and a second disc filled with remixed and reworked versions of 6 of the songs. Their unique blend of electronic beats and sounds melded with cutting guitar riffs and soaring vocal harmonies creates a lush, textured soundscape. The band’s sharp pop sensibilities serve them well here, making the tunes catchy and unforgettable.

Some of the highlights include:
‘Our Fight’ – the newest song on the album, holds much promise for future endeavors. Begun as an instrumental by Hardie and Hamel, it was fully realized after a weekend session with Rowand in Hamel’s home studio;
‘Pacific’ – for anyone who has longed to escape the monotony of everyday life;
‘Someone’ (remix) was created by Bill Hamel, Arthur Hardie, James Rowand and British dance music legend,
Simon Noble;
‘Bonfire’ - a musical interpretation of Robert Frost’s poem ‘the Bonfire.’ The music was written by Hardie and Rowand at a party, with the lyrics thrown in when they grabbed a nearby book and opened it to that poem.

IR Orlando #17

April 24, 2007

It’s been another long delay, but hopefully this one is worth the wait. After weeks of being very busy and lots of computer issues, I’m back on track with an excellent playlist that includes some of my absolute favorites. Enjoy!

1. Summerbirds in the Cellar | Behold the Wolf ( from the album ‘With The Hands Of The Hunter It All Becomes Dead’)
For now, Orlando can still claim Summerbirds as one of our finest bands, but they split a lot of their time between here and Athens, GA. The band is made up of members Brad, Curtis, Tyson, and Yardley, but Brad and Curtis have also been providing their musical services to the Athens-based Now It’s Overhead. Now It’s Overhead frontman Andy LeMaster is also a noted recording engineer who co-owns a recording studio called Chase Park Transduction studio where REM, The Drive-by Truckers, and The Glands have recorded.

2. Chance and the Choir | Life and Life Only
MySpace
Chance & the Choir are based in Los Angeles, CA. So why am I playing them? Is it a Friends of the Family segment? Actually, it could be, since Chance has been a long standing friend of all of the Insomnia Radio shows (as well as TONS of other podcasts)… BUT… in fact, Chance is a hometown boy, born and raised right here in Orlando.
‘Life and Life Only’ is Chance & the Choir’s 16th single.

3. Crash the Satellites | Learning to Land
Jacksonville’s Crash the Satellites is a band that I completely fell in love with, right from the first listen. Their excellent debut CD, ‘Learning to Land’ came out in 2006 and is available is CD Baby, iTunes and tons of other download stores. I highly recommend it. Band members are Paul, Julia, Dan and Brian and they are terrific live as well. Lead singer/guitarist Paul and drummer Julia have been playing in bands together since they were about 15.

4. Bing Futch | Crazy Feels Like
Bing is a busy guy – he has a video production company, and he also plays Appalachain mountain dulcimer, which he teaches and performs with all over the country. He’s also a podcaster, hosting the show All Florida Indies, and has produced over 50 episodes and counting, and he hosts the Dulcimerica video podcast. On top of all that, he’s a member of the Americana band Mohave.

5. Between the Trees | White Lines & Red Lights
MySpace
Orlando-based Between the Trees formed in early 2005, while most of them were still in high school. Their new CD, ‘The Story and the Song’ has been garnering national attention for the band and they are currently on tour throughout the U.S. and will be joining the Warped Tour this summer.

6. Life of Pi | Wonder Book for Girls and Boys
I’ve played Tampa-based Life of Pi before and talked about how much I love them. This is a track from their brand new CD ‘Monsoon Season’ which is due to be released soon.

IR Orlando #16: Post*Records Extravaganza

March 15, 2007

Post*Records was formed in the late summer of 2004, but the first official release didn’t come out until February of 2005. Now they have close to a dozen artists, and over a dozen releases available, including a compilation CD ‘Post*Records & Friends present: Olé!’ (available for $8). It includes songs from Post*Records and friends featuring The Punching Contest, The Wynn Brothers, Derek Lyn Plastic, Dodger, Yip Yip, Summerbirds in the Cellar, Pardon My Carbon, Mumpsy, The Band of the Name, Watch Me Disappear, Kingsbury, Sean Moore, The Heathens, Danny Feedback, Dirt McCoy & The Trailer Park Refugees, Très Bien, Jason Choi, The Ocean Floor, The Swirling Bees, The Bad Spellers, Bob on Blonde, and many others.

1. EVIL Ballerina
‘Idiot’
This is the all-girl band that sparked the birth of Post*Records.

2. Mumpsy
‘The Emperor’
They have numerous upcoming shows listed on their MySpace page, most notably their upcoming CD release party at BackBooth on April 10 for the ‘3 People’ release. ‘3 People’ is a concept mini-album about the lives of 3 very different fictitious characters living in Iowa. Mumpsy’s debut album ‘The Exuberance of Peachtree’ is also available at the Post*Records store. In May, they will be part of the ‘Three Bands in a Van’ tour with Sean Moore and Dodger, all around the eastern U.S.

3. The Heathens
‘Busy Nights at the Meatmarket’The Heathens
Their debut CD ‘Big White House’ is available at the Post*Records store. The Heathens will be appearing at SXSW this month. The music video to ‘Stickin’ Around’ directly by Ben Piety will be screened as part of the SXSW Film Screenings. You can see a preview of the video here:
SXSW Film Screenings
The band includes members Matt Butcher, Chris Rae, Post*Records founder Chris Cucci, and featured solo artist Sean Moore and Mumpsy’s Jeff Ilgenfritz.

4. Sean Moore
‘Visibility Anxiety’
Three and a half years in the making, ‘Signs of Potential Life’ came out on Feb. 20. Sean is also a member of The Heathens, Pardon My Carbon and Dodger, so he is a very busy guy! The wide variety of instruments Sean plays includes: violin (since age 5), French horn, guitar, bass, piano, organ, and trumpet.

5. The Bad Spellers
‘The Ungrateful Sojourn of Nomadic Follicles’
MySpace page
Based in Tokyo, Japan, The Bad Spellers have a brand new release ‘Keep On Shining!’ coming out on March 27. The duo is comprised of members Yasuko and Tony. They have previously released EP available at Post*Records – it’s called ‘Fall in Love’ and was a split release with The London Apartments.

6. Dodger
‘Shiny Knobs’
Dodger has 2 EPs under their belt and are at work on a full-length album. The band includes Heathens’ members Sean Moore and Jeff Ilgenfritz, along with Matt Kamm, Conrad Winslow, and Phil McCombs.

The Band of the Name7. The Band of the Name
‘Really Always on the Changin’ (from the CD ‘Saggin’ the Bargins’)

MySpace
From the Post*Records website:
‘If we were to attempt to describe this album, we would either end up annoying the band or confusing you…
Suffice to say, if you enjoy The Advantage minus the video game references or Baroque jazzy math rock-ish instrumentals played by guys who sometimes like to dress like dinosaurs, then you’ll probably enjoy this record from one of our favorite bands ever.’ Newest release is ‘Please Step Off The Miracle And Turn To Your Left.’

8. KingsburyKingsbury
‘Corpse’
MySpace page
If you missed it, you should check out IR Orlando episode 14, which featured 2 songs from Kingsbury’s excellent full-length CD ‘The Great Compromise’ (released in January). They also have 2 previous EPs (’The Open Sea’ and ‘This Place is Coming Down’), both available at the Post*Records store. Originally formed in Vero Beach, they relocated to Orlando in 2003. Band members are Bruce Reed, T.J. Burke, Mark Freeman, Samantha Christine, and Alexis Hamlin-Vogler.

9. Watch Me Disappear
‘Render’ (from the CD ‘…In the Biblical Sense.’)
Unfortunately, Watch Me Disappear broke up last November.

10. The Punching Contest
‘Ninja Enters Room’ ( from ‘Is My Copilot’)
You may not believe it when you hear this song, but this band was formed as an experiment with an actor and some acoustic musicians. Despite being fans of heavy music, their musical outlets had all been on the folksy side… until The Punching Contest.

IR Orlando #15: The Lakeland Edition

February 11, 2007

I started out with a slightly different playlist for this episode, then realized that more than half of the bands were from Lakeland, Florida (which is about midway between Orlando and Tampa). At the last minute, I decided to make it an all-Lakeland show. I’m certain that we’re just scratching the surface, but here are 3 great Lakeland artists for you to enjoy.

1. SemiSoul | Charlie’s Untitled
Lakeland-based SemiSoul has a 3-song EP out. They have plenty of upcoming shows all around Florida, including Lakeland, Ybor City and New Port Richey. IR Orlando #14

January 12, 2007

Welcome to my first show of 2007. It’s nice to be back! I have a great lineup of mostly Orlando bands for you today. I hope you like the music!

1. Life Of Pi | Young Jim Hawkins
Based in Tampa, Life of Pi has been heard on IR Orlando before. This track is from their 2005 release ‘Pyrrhic Victory.’ They are working on a new CD and I hope to bring you some brand new songs from that one on a future show. You can also buy several songs from them at their MySpace site, at only 95 cents per track and no DRM!

Lead singer/guitarist Stephen hosts the 11th Hour radio show on WMNF in Tampa on Monday nights from 11pm – 1am. I read that they may be changing their schedule around, but I don’t have the final word on that, so for now, you can listen online or listen to recent archived shows from their website. 11th Hour MySpace page

2. Minimal | El Cubo
Formed in 2003, the members of Minimal have combined their experience into a unique blend of Latin rhythms, intense guitars and drum machines. They play lots of gigs in South Florida, so check their website or
MySpace page for upcoming dates.

3. music versus the heart | Finding Isabel
Orlando-based MVTH have 2 releases, including an EP from 2003 and a full-length 2005 CD called ‘Sorry for the Memories.’ They are working on a follow up now.

4. Sean Evan | Traffic Jam
Sean has been doing his solo singer/songwriter thing since 2003. He plays quite a few gigs around Orlando, so check his
MySpace page for upcoming shows.

5. Weszt | Can’t Erase You
This is from their new CD ‘morningafterlife,’ the band’s 2nd release. They were recently booked to play the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa on January 27th. Check their website or
MySpace for TONS of upcoming dates – they are well worth seeing live.

6. Kingsbury | Blood in the Kitchen
7. Kingsbury| Peninsula
MySpace
I am excited to play these tracks since they are on the about-to-be-released ‘The Great Compromise.’ The band sent me a copy a few weeks ago and it’s excellent, intelligent rock! They are having a CD Release Party at The Social on Friday, Jan 19 which will feature performances by Kingsbury, as well as their
Post*Records labelmates The Heathens and Dodger, and Apollo Quartet. Go to the Post*Records website to get your ticket – they are only $10 and include a copy of the new album! This show will sell out, so get your tickets NOW!
