Record Store Day in the US & Canada - April 19th
April 18, 2008
Saturday, April 19th marks the arrival of RECORD STORE DAY here in the US and Canada!
The already heavily anticipated RECORD STORE DAY celebration will include the participation of hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country. All of these stores will simultaneously link and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally. The support from musicians, fans, customers and the record industry by and large has been overwhelmingly evident from mash book entries. Visit: (www.recordstoreday.com)
“There’s nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realised what fantastic memories such a collection of music brings back when you see it all in one place. This is why I’m more than happy to support Record Store Day and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for us all for many years to come. Cheers!” – PAUL MC CARTNEY
“It’s important to keep indie record stores alive because their unique environments introduce music lovers to things in a very personal way.” - NORAH JONES
“I have watched independent record stores evaporate all over America and Europe. That’s why I go into as many as I can and buy records whenever possible. If we lose the independent record store, we lose big. Every time you buy your records at one of these places, it’s a blow to the empire.” -HENRY ROLLINS
“You can’t roll a joint on an iPod - buy vinyl!” –SHELBY LYNNE
“The record store. Where true fandom begins. It’s the soul of discovery, and the place where you can always return for that mighty buzz. The posters. The imports. The magazines. The discerning clerks, paid in vinyl, professors of the groove. Long live that first step inside, when the music envelopes you and you can’t help it. You walk up to the counter and ask the question that begins the journey — “what is that you’re playing?” Long live the record store, and the guys and girls who turn the key, and unlock those dreams, every day.” –CAMERON CROWE
In addition to the above, record store stories from the likes of Cameron Crowe, Chuck Berry, Damien Rice, Damon Albarn, Del The Funky Homosapien, Ian Gillan, Joan Jett, kt Tunstall, Mike Patton, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Patton Oswalt, Regina Spektor, Sam Phillips, Ziggy Marley, have been pouring in and the list keeps growing.
“For most indie record stores, the rumors of our demise are not just greatly exaggerated, they’re downright confusing,” says the organizers behind RECORD STORE DAY. As we continue to provide our communities with a rallying point for the arts, our customers are speaking loud and clear, “We’re not letting you guys go anywhere.”
Spearheaded by the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, Coalition Of Independent Music Stores, Music Monitor Network, Newbury Comics, Value Music Group of Indie Stores RECORD STORE DAY will work to set up special events at all participating stores on said date. The participating stores will provide customers with goodie bags filled with new formats, new releases, and exciting information on music, theatrical, comic book and gaming releases. They will also link to run extensive marketing campaigns both on a national level and a local level.

Bodog Wildcard / Hoodie Giveaway
April 9, 2008
Alright. Here’s the deal. None of the bands in the Southern California region made it to the World Grand Finale in the
BodogBattle. All of these bands however do still have the chance to advance through Wildcard voting on the Bodog website.
Two slots are open for bands to advance in a chance to win a million dollar contract and to supposedly receive facetime on a reality tv show.
While I normally wouldn’t advocate random voting in online contests, I feel a little jilted after manning five six-hour judging events in where none of the groups from our area advanced. I guess it goes with the territory and anything can happen…but..
Here’s where you come in. If you are interested you can log-into the Bodog site and vote once a day to help two of the following local groups move forward. These are all groups you may be familiar with as we’ve played them on IR: SoCal in the past several months. Bands can be voted for from their individual pages between April 1st and April 30th. Winners will be announced May 4th.
VOTING LINKS:
Cry Havoc
Building a Better Spaceship
Out of State
Paper Thin Walls
Letters Burning
Lo Mass Republic
If you do vote, let me know and I’ll enter you into the running for a new small-sized smoke-free Bodog Battle hooded sweatshirt (runs more into medium size). Just send me a quick note to charles@insomniaradio.net if interested and I’ll have a draw a name later in the month closer to April 30th.

Online Radio Position Possibility
April 6, 2008
Hey everyone!
To all the bands, record companies and managers! I just wanted to let you guys know that I have the oportunity in becoming a DJ on an online radio station! I will not get paid for this! It is a commercial free radio station. I just wanted to put this out there. If you are ok or not ok with me playing your music on the station please let me know. This is another way to get free publicity for your music to hopefully even more people! If you are interested in checking out the station website here is the link - http://www.bounceradio.net/ I am planning on streaming IR Chicago through them!
To IR Chicago listeners this will mean more content more often! This will be a two hour show every week! This will also give the bands more opportunity for airplay and you and more listeners a chance to hear their music! What I am asking from you, the listener, is some feedback! What I was thinking was split the show into two parts, an hour each. Then either you get IR Chicago twice a week or pt 1 one week and the other the following week! Send me an email to chicago@insomniaradio.net and tell me what you prefer! Just in the subject line put listener poll! Or leave me a comment here!
Thanks
Kara Balicki

SXSW: Quick Check-in from Austin
March 15, 2008
The SXSW Music Festival has really been an experience unlike no other, with overlapping bands playing in every available space within the space of several city blocks. Its musical gluttony at its finest.
I’m moving into day four of the festival, and honestly having trouble getting ANY blogging or recording done due to my hotel’s proximity away from the downtown area, Austin’s lack of cabs, and the overflowing music menu that was presented to me causing severe ADD.
I’ve forgone all panels, as I’d rather watch music than talking heads, having seen about forty groups over the three days I’ve been here. I’m even debating whether I want to shlep around swag today due to the ridiculous amount of walking that I’ve been doing. Mixed with the heat, and most of the time, alcohol, you are fully exhausted by day’s end.
There are lots of legends here. I ran into John Doe from X yesterday while waiting in line for food, and saw Mick Jones perform yesterday. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Lou Reed are also apparently here, not to mention several groups you might have heard of from the past, such as the UK based The Wedding Present or The English Beat. David Gedge (of tWP) stopped and asked to look at my map a few days back, which was a total trip. I believe he was looking for ‘Oasis’, most likely a street in town, but definitely made me do a double take.
I’ve been spending an hour or two each day laboriously loading the pics of the festival into Flickr from an old laptop that keeps freezing. There is a lot to say, but for now I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
Time to go find a cab and see what the final day has in store.

IR: SoCal - Last Night in Los Angeles
March 11, 2008
If any of you haven’t noticed all my excessive posts on Twitter yammering on about all the bands playing this year at the South by SouthWest Music Festival in Austin, TX… well… this posting is to confirm it to the rest of all ya’ll. I’m going to Austin this year and tonight is my last night in Los Angeles, well… kinda.
I’ll be flying out solo early tomorrow morning as part of a sorely needed personal trip, that will definitely spill into the Insomnia Radio realm to some degree. I’ve always wanted to attend SXSW but haven’t gotten around to it until now. I guess you could say everything came together at the right time, with an extra side jaunt at the tail end to visit family in the Houston area.
After slogging through about 800 band files the festival has offered online, I’ve compiled an overlapping Read more

New site, looking for more music!
February 24, 2008
Hope you all are enjoying the new site - I am! It’s a HUGE improvement over the previous one, and I think it’s much easier to find all that Insomnia Radio has to offer.
Now, as for Insomnia Radio:Detroit - we need more music! If you’re a band from the south eastern side of Michigan, the metro Detroit area - submit your music! It’s easy to do, even easier than before. Send it to me in an email and say: “I want my music on Insomnia Radio:Detroit!” Or something to that effect! That’s it! No forms to fill out, nothing to read - just free promotion for your music, simple and easy.
Where to send? Email to DETROIT at INSOMNIARADIO dot NET - just replace the “at” and “dot” with their keyboard equivalents!!!
Hope to see your submission soon!

Version 2.0 (or is this 4.0?)
February 22, 2008
Before the weekend hits, I wanted to update everyone on the ground zero progress
It’s been over 72 hours of coding, collaboration, and flexing the brainpower to the limit, but the IR Family has a pretty damn slick new website and some new ways of getting our content out to you.
If you have been previously visiting any of our Regional show websites (for example http://socal.insomniaradio.net) you’ll notice the URL now forwards to IR SoCal’s category page here on the main site.
Everyone’s RSS feeds remain the same.
Wait, just a single website? Yep! We decided it’s easier for our listeners, and easier for us to manage. And hey, doesn’t it look slick? Well, the credit for the layout goes to Brian Gardner and his Revolution Magazine theme. Ok, I’m rambling. This entire process though grueling, has been a blessing in disguise.
Use that GET IN TOUCH tab up there to reach out with any suggestions, feedback, etc.
Enjoy the weekend gang, and keep checking back for new content across the entire network.
