Miggs: Girls and Boys

April 28, 2010

The rock trio Miggs will be releasing its fifth album, “Wide Awake,” on May 18, 2010, via Rock Ridge Music. The first album to feature drummer Ryan Scarbrough (who joined vocalist/guitarist Don Miggs and bassist Michael Lombardo in the group in 2008), “Wide Awake” was recorded in Tampa in December 2009 with multi-platinum producer/engineer Ken Lewis (Fall Out Boy, Kanye West). Easily Miggs’ most accomplished, fresh-sounding and accessible collection of songs to date, “Wide Awake” is about clarity, focus; seeing things the way they are – not as we want them to be – and accepting, even embracing that state. It’s a good thing even when it’s a bad thing sometimes.

“I wanted to make an album that felt both immediate and nostalgic,” says band namesake Don Miggs. “It’s worn in and new at the same time. This is the first time I ever recorded an album with same guys I’d been playing with for the last two years and it shows. We didn’t have to try to make it all fit. It just did.”

To promote the album before its release in May, Miggs will appear on the national morning television show “The Today Show” on NBC on April 10th. Additionally, the group has been posting an ongoing weekly series of webisodes on its website (www.miggsmusic.com), which examines what happens behind the scenes with Miggs: a crew of cameras and feature film Hollywood producers followed Miggs on the road for six months – on tour, recording “Wide Awake,” playing on “Good Morning America,” eating at IHop, sleeping in Motel 6’s, and at home in Tampa.

Archeology: White Walls

April 25, 2010

When Jason Davis and Daniel Walker met at an archaeological research site in Eastern Washington, little did they know how strikingly similar the paths that led to their convergence were.

Both endured childhoods spent confined to wooden pews as son’s of preacher men, suffering at the hands of what they describe as the “hypocrisy and malevolence” of the Christian church. Their anger towards the church, and its doctrine, prompted the pair to independently renounce the faith of their fathers and leave the church. All that time spent in choirs and thumbing through hymnals wasn’t a complete loss though, and while they left theology behind, Davis and Walker cultivated and retained a healthy passion for hymnal harmonies and musical exploration. [Bio]

“White Walls” is the perfect introduction to the band, and a beautifully catchy song that should resonate in your head like a mellow anthem.

Lily Sparks: Stars

April 20, 2010

In a music scene where shock-poppers, like Lady Gaga, and girl rockers, like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, attract so much (too much?) public attention, it’s refreshing to once again hear an honest-to-goodness hard rocking girl band. ~Dan MacIntosh

Forged in the crucible of the New York rock scene, Lily Sparks has emerged with a unique voice. First timers are never quite sure what to expect when they see a Lily Sparks show but after a few seconds it’s pretty clear: They rock. Flanked by glitter guitars that alternate between crunch and wail, the singer’s got a set of pipes that can go from fragility to fury in a heartbeat. These girls play hard-rocking, toe-tapping songs that’ll make you want to shout and sing along. [Bio]

Shotgun Lover: Oh No, Yeah Yeah

April 12, 2010

Nashville’s Shotgun Lover recently got a pretty amazing endorsement: Paste Magazine’s Steve LaBate loves the band so much he’s decided to manage them! We’ve got a killer track from the band, some biographical details, and upcoming tour dates for you live aficionados.

The Bio:

Music is for the people, Shotgun Lover is for the people. If art is a take on one’s perception or reaction to existence, than that is what Shotgun Lover shoots for. The band steams straight ahead for the listener with it’s take on youth in America and Rock and Roll . But the listener can only go as far as the writer is willing to stick to his guns. This is what Shotgun Lover has tried to be about since day one. Genuine American Rock and Roll meant to be enjoyed, listened to, danced to, drank to, and felt.

After playing together for a year and a half in another local band, all of the members decided it was time for something else in the Spring of 2009. With countless gigs, practices, and stories behind them the guys hit the garage and started pounding out the tunes that now define who they are and the music they make. With influences that range from Led Zeppelin to Black Sabbath to Wilco and My Morning Jacket, Andrew Nelson (Vocals, Guitars), Blount Floyd (BGV, Guitars), Nathan Roland (Bass), and Chris Johnston (Percussion) are set to release their first EP “Au Revoir” on April 27, 2010.

The Flatliners: Carry The Banner

March 25, 2010

Long story short? Ever since my late teenage years I’ve loved Fat Wreck Chords. Several years ago the punk-heavy label embraced podcasting and it was a minor dream come true. So, when they send an advance single from Ontario’s energetic punk trio The Flatliners, it was played at full volume repeatedly, then shared with you fine people!

Their new disc Cavalcade releases on April 13, 2010 and you can pre-order it here (get the color vinyl!)

Here’s what Flatliners vocalist Chris Cresswell had to offer about “Carry The Banner,” a tune with a special meaning:

Back in the Great Depression, responsible, successful men became vagrants. Everyone was cast out like an economic-turned-social eclipse. When these people without homes or any sentiments of hope couldn’t find a safe place to sleep at night during these trivial times, their only option left was to “carry the banner.” This meant they’d risk sleeping on the streets while trying to avoid being locked up for vagrant charges or worse, being killed.

We’re lucky enough to live in a time where the world is a bit more stable than it was back then, but people need to remember we’re not too far off from where we were back then. What we do with our lives – play music and travel the world – we basically live like homeless buskers for 8 months out of the year. Our new album Cavalcade was partly inspired by reading about those dire times during the Great Depression and realizing just how many parallels there are in these times we live in today. And our new song “Carry The Banner” fully embodies the theme of positivity in uncertain times. Negativity is overrated.

My Glorious: You Should Be Dancin’

March 21, 2010

This trio from Vienna understands how to groove out, keep things mellow yet intense, and generally keep you intrigued from track to track. They’ve been called “Coldplay with balls” by www.musikreviews.de and that description shines through when taking the time to listen to their EP “Leper” as well as the much more varied yet rewarding new full length “Home is where the Heart breaks.”

I’ll be opening and closing Insomnia Radio #172 with these guys but was eager to throw an alternate track your way. Enjoy!
