What’s the point of going solo? A musical polymath versed in jazz studies and Madlib beats, Doug Stuart has spent the last several years etched deep into the grooves of some of the Bay Area’s funkiest ensembles, playing bass for The California Honeydrops, Bells Atlas, hundreds of jazz combos, session work, and most recently as keyboardist for Astronauts, etc. on their national tours accompanying Toro y Moi. Jinn Grin is his own adventure, though. Composed and produced by Stuart alone from start to finish, it’s the first time this artist has taken a step back from a rigorous gigging and touring schedule to offer his own, unfiltered musical expression. “The Answer” premiered May 10 on the Bandcamp weekly; with the EP set to release June 14.
