Hyla: Sides

HylaPulling influences from dream pop, garage and shoe-gaze, Hyla is a new project from long time friends Alex Board (vocals/guitar) and Rob Stephens (bass) who have been playing and touring in Perth bands over the last 10 years. Guitarist Michael Antonas and drummer Ethan Darnell have completed the lineup for an outfit reminiscent of shoe gaze classics My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, with a taste of newer garage rock influences such as Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. The track ‘Sides’ is a perfect mixture of multi-layered guitars creating a thin gauze over the beautiful vocals that flow directly underneath, hypnotically driven by the ever-present drum-beat and into the twisted reverb. I’m also really digging the almost church-like organ bookends.

Hyla is planning to simultaneously release 2 EPs of self-recorded material by mid 2014 and are currently working on their debut album, expected release early 2015. Some Additional Influences: Slowdive, Byrds, Verve, Ride, Mogwai, Mazzy Star.
