(((S))): Dying

August 31, 2009

Danish Darkwave. Free EP available from www.af-music.de. (((S))) is a mysterious one-man-project from Copenhagen. There are no pictures of either himself or his studio band. Their music nevertheless creates whole worlds. The sinister serenades of the debut “Ghost” switches on your head and set your imagination running wild with its gentle sounds and dreamy sad dancefloor fillers.

Set somewhere in the dynamic field between The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cure and Tiamat, the scandinavian singer’s songs touch and move you.

Floating above it all is the ghostly voice of (((S))), like Johan Edlund from a far and more “comfortably numb” then David Gilmour. Denmark’s new act will find a lot of friends in the scene. “Ghost” is the ideal soundtrack to an evening with wine and candlelight but also an earthquake on the dancefloor.

The CD album will be released on the 04th of September on Danse Macabre. You can also download an EP with five songs for free on www.af-music.de.

Blitzen Trapper: Black River Killer

August 30, 2009

Blitzen Trapper: Black River KillerAs its title would lead one to believe, the Black River Killer EP contains the disturbing and great song “Black River Killer” from Blitzen Trapper’s excellent Sept. ‘08 full-length album Furr.

What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains 6 more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CDR that Blitzen Trapper has been selling at their live performances for the past year or so.  [subpop.com]

Good Old War: Looking For Shelter

August 29, 2009

Another track from their 2008 album Only Way To Be Alone (previously on the DD Coney Island)

GOW Acoustic folk trio Good old War launches yet another extensive US tour this week, this time with Brooklyn’s lauded indie group, The Honorary Title. While the busy band has spent much of the summer on tour (including dates with RX Bandits & Dredg), it has also reigned large on the radio. Their recent performance on the nationally syndicated Acoustic Cafe program marked a high point in dozens of live on-air visits for Good old War.

The Marchen: Days

August 28, 2009

From their recently released self-titled EP.

The Marchen is an alternative indie rock band based out of South Florida.
Guitarists Matt Salcito and Noah Garbarino began writing music for the band in late 2006. They soon filled out the lineup by adding Noah’s brother Ben Garbarino, the drummer, and bassist Erick King for the rhythm section.

The Marchen As their style expanded and the need for more diverse instrumentation surfaced, Andrew Cochran joined to band to fill the part. The five then sought out a singer and eventually recruited friend, and music major, Katherine Dzuro.

The largest goal with their music was to try to realize the use of more extraordinary instruments in a sea of bands in their local music scene with the standard two guitar, bass, and drums arrangement.

Mandolin, banjo, piano, melodica, trumpet, steel guitar, and others are strewn about throughout their songs to create unique sounds and an interesting live performance.

The Wooden Sky: Something Hiding For Us in the Night

August 27, 2009

The Wooden SkyHot off of their Bedrooms and Backstreets Tour and the Canadian release of their second album “If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone”, Toronto-based outfit The Wooden Sky is excited to be hitting the road with Elliott Brood (Six Shooter) for a string of nine US shows, starting in Seattle October 9th and finishing up at CMJ in NYC October 22nd.

Often compared to the likes of The National and old-school Counting Crows, The Wooden Sky’s new 13-track LP brilliantly sweeps through countless rock and roll subgenres. It is sure to please even the harshest music critics with the deftness of Allman Brothers, the songwriting focus of Wilco, and the experimental sonic cacophony of the Flaming Lips. This career-defining record was composed over months spent living, writing and recording between Toronto and Montreal. The list of people involved the creation of the record is expansive, including some of the band’s oldest friends and newest acquaintances: Heather Kirby (Ohbijou), Debra Jean Creelman (ex-Mother Mother), Howard Billerman (ex-Arcade Fire), Edwin Huizinga (Mars Volta), Adam Kinner (Marathon), and Tyler Belluz.

The Wooden Sky has spent the last few weeks wowing audiences all across Canada, playing unconventional spaces like rooftops, backyards, campfires and parks, and is now pleased to announce this more traditional tour, which officially begins in Canada on September 26th and marks their official foray into America! ZAZA: Sooner or Later

August 25, 2009

From Brooklyn, New York, and from their recent EP Cameo

ZAZA Newcomers Zaza are an intensely dark and romantic duo forming in New York late last year. Multi-instrumentalists Jennifer Fraser, formerly from The Warlocks, and Danny Taylor create music which is equal parts vintage and modern. With echoey, ethereal vocals and lush guitars strengthened by muscular percussion, they create dynamic, dreamy melodies which mesmerize.

Recently sharing stages with Raveonettes, Tricky, Morning After Girls, and Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Zaza’s live performances are crafted into an aural and visual soundscape. Using designed backdrops and light boxes by various New York visual and installations artists their sound and vision make you feel like you’re walking into a fantasy. [IODA]

GroundSound: Get Better

August 24, 2009

Bringing the funk to your Monday morning, here is GroundSound with ‘Get Better’ from their debut record PAY ATTENTION.

GroundSound - Pay Attention “GroundSound is the birth child of brothers nEko Soto on bass and Ray Soto on guitar and powered by the fury of drummer Jon Carlucci. GroundSound is a rock/funk power trio with a soaring, stellar live show, mixing funky jams with well crafted and catchy original songs that never fail to please the crowd.

PAY ATTENTION, GroundSound’s debut album, is mixed and mastered by 3-time Grammy winner Phil Magnotti and co-produced by Buck Brundage and SotoS Music Productions. 14 original tracks, it is complete and far ranging: title track ‘Pay Attention’ is one funky jam, ‘Zombie’ has an infectious chorus, ‘Get Better’ is heavy and hard hitting, ‘Plato’ shows the band’s sweet side and ‘No They Can’t’ rocks.

GroundSound shows remind us of 60s happenings crossed with the funk groove of today. The debut CD PAY ATTENTION proves there is substance, quality and depth to GroundSound’s songwriting and music. Definitely making moves and shakin’ things up, this band of brothers is here to stay.”
