Los Campesinos!: This is how you spell “hahaha we destroyed the hopes and dreams of a generation of faux romantics”

Bratty, spastic, melodic, indie-punk. These are all words I could use to describe Los Campesinos! (roughly translated: The Peasants) – upon a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th listen. The first time I heard them I adopted an instant “deer-in-headlights” expression; probably carried over from my bewildered perception of the ridiculously long, tongue-in-cheek song title.

After hitting play the 2nd time, however,  this 7-piece originally from Cardiff, Wales buried their synth-laden hooks into my cranium and refused to let go.

This track – which ends with an angsty LiveJournal reference so brilliant it hurts my face – is from their first full length effort, well worth exploring. But if you want to jump straight to the new, start with “We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed,” released late last year and produced by Seattle’s John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Pavement).

Besides, you guys know I’ve always loved bands that podcast 🙂
