Enjoy episode number 59 of Insomnia Radio UK.

We don’t answer the questions about where the Jetpacks and Hovercars we were promised actually are, I’m afraid, but here are nine great songs from UK artists, from a wide variety of genres.

    Darrin Kohavi: Please Believe Me

    February 28, 2009

From his 2008 EP Please Believe Me

Darrin Kohavi was raised in a musical family. He started playing classical piano at the age of eight. By the age of 17, he had mastered jazz, rock and R&B, and added guitar, bass and vocals to his musical talents.

Darrin has created a unique blend of contemporary music, combining modern/urban styles with the memorable melodies and backdrops of his musical influences — The Beatles, Cat Stevens and Jim Croce to name a few. Darrin performs regularly at popular Los Angeles venues including The Viper Room, Temple Bar and BB King’s Blues Club.
In November 2008, Darrin released his Please Believe Me EP. The album features five signature songs that capture Darrin’s distinct style.

We Were Promised Jetpacks: Ships With Holes Will Sink

    February 27, 2009

We Were Promised JetpacksEvery year the fine folk at over at IODA Promonet host a nice party over at the South by SouthWest Music Festival in Austin. Repeating the fine lineup from last year, IODA has once again put together a great cross section of artists that will prove to be one of the highlights of the festival. This is their fifth annual offering, featuring bands such as Easy Star All-Stars, Deer Tick, J. Tillman, Blind Pilot, and many more.

Among the great spotlighted bands performing is Scottish group “We Were Promised Jetpacks”, an outfit I’ve been waiting to feature for quite some time here at IR. Fortunately Fat Cat Records has made this track “Ships With Holes Will Sink” available on the free SXSW sampler that IODA just issued the last few days.  A full length album should be coming in the next year if memory serves correctly.

    Action Painters: Supermarket

    February 24, 2009

The latest single from The Action Painters. From their upcoming 2009 record with pop Producer Pete Wade.

Formed in a frigid Brooklyn basement in 2006, Action Painters are a scraggly band of misfits who practiced hard and won the big game. They play intoxicating power-pop-new-wave-soul that will make you shake your ass and pinch your girlfriend’s skittles.

Check out their new video for the live track “456,” one of 3 live songs on a EP/video project out in March.

    Balmorhea: San Solomon

    February 23, 2009

BalmorheaBalmorhea, pronounced Bal-moor-ay, has always been Rob Lowe and Michael Muller from Austin, Texas, but have recently added four more players to the lineup, on violin, upright bass, cello, and drums respectively.

Drifting amongst the hazy heat and hopeful longing of “San Solomon,” their music captures the indescribable feelings of living and growing in Texas. Mirroring the vast Texas skies, Balmorhea’s music is imbued with a visceral weight and endless space.

Balmorhea self-released their first album, self-titled, in April 2007 and followed up with this album Rivers Arms in February 2008. Balmorhea have toured the US three times and recently completed a third full-length album called “All is Wild, All is Silent”, with a street release date of March 10th. Check them out at SXSW in Austin on March 19th at Club 119 – 11pm.
