IR SoCal Welcomes: Dare Dukes – Bakersfield
December 29, 2008
They said, “Don’t go. Nothing in Bakersfield”
From Savannah, Georgia – we welcome artist Dare Dukes back to the storied country & rock byways (Merle Haggard, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead) of the crown jewel of the area, Bakersfield. No doubt this town contains some of the eccentric characters on their individual missions that Dare describes his music as embodying.
Dare was born and raised in San Jose, and grew up as the state blossomed into what he calls, “exit-ramp culture”—a maze of smoked-glass franchises and cookie-cutter subdivisions that took root along the vast network of interstate freeways. “Everyone knows the clichés about suburbia: It’s a stark, sanitized landscape, pretty much soulless,” Dare explains. “No one needs to remind us of that. I’m more interested in the poetry I see there–the weirdness, the anomalies, the resistance. Even in this unlikely grid you can find courageous people and precious things.
“Bakersfield,” which Dare describes as “the closest thing I have to a traditional song,” is heartbreaking in its spare depiction of lonely desperation. Minimally arranged, the song builds measure by measure, as visually arresting lyrics describe a man’s search for his lost lover. By the time trumpet and trombone blow in to announce the protagonist’s arrival in Bakersfield, the song has created a large and empathetic space, large enough for the listener step into.
“So ease off the clutch and dip from the Tehachapis into the San Joaquin”

Sarah Hethcoat: I Got You
December 29, 2008
Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Sarah Hethcoat has released her new EP “Nobody Likes a Bully” on October 27, 2008, produced by famed producer Dave Cobb (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Chris Cornell). The track “I Got You” is the pivotal song on the EP. There is a very personal story that goes with the song, excising demons so to speak, and musically it’s where the tone and direction of the entire EP came from. The song is the springboard for everything, musically and lyrically on the album.
Although it began as a vulnerable and painful ballad, she and Cobb flipped it entirely on its head and turned it into an empowering song where it’s not coming from the point of view of someone who feels like they are a helpless victim, but someone who has triumphed through the adversity and feels the vindication from letting go.
Musically, for the entire EP, producer Cobb looked to the 60s for the inspiration. Drums were covered in sheets, the way Ringo Starr used to do to give them that muted “handsy” sound. The sound channels influences from David Bowie to the Bee Gees to Phil Spector and The Ronnettes to Cream to even Lou Reed.
We’d like to thank our friend Mona for cuing us in to Sarah’s music and consistently tickling our musical nerve. The 60s vibe and the empowering opening guitar on “I Got You” have kept us continuously coming back for several addictive shots of soulful musical gluttony… and that’s a good thing. If interested in purchasing the new EP, it’s available at itunes , e-music, and amazon.

Von Iva: Birds of Prey
December 27, 2008
Von Iva creates their own brand of music by combining breakbeat cool with a dance punk attitude. Imagine Tina Turner singing over hammering dance beats and layers of synths. These ladies are turning out new and exciting music for people that aren’t afraid to put Donna Summer, Joy Division and Jay Z back to back on a playlist.
Von Iva first made a name for themselves thanks to their eye-popping, heart stopping live performances, and their rambunctious debut EP grabbed the attention of both critics and fans. Before they knew it this hard working, D.I.Y band was performing at the X Games and playing to huge crowds in Japan. They have also had their music featured on Showtime’s L Word and this summer Von Iva will be appear frequently on MTV’s Logo Channel performing the theme song for the surfing reality show, Curl Girls. Ongoing, the band generates more broad visibility via lifestyle marketing support from Etnies’ Girl, Dell Computers, Nokia Phones, and compilations from Petrol Records and Agent Records.
Now a triple threat with Jillian Iva on Vox, Becky Kupersmith on Keys, and Kelly Harris on Drums, Von Iva has created a genre bending original sound that will move even the most reserved to dance. They have just completed their highly anticipated full length record titled “Our Own Island”. Fueled by simplicity, these tracks are poised to revive sweaty dance floors and sold-out audiences across the globe.
