Cruiserweight: Balboa
September 30, 2008

BIG BOLD LETTERS, Cruiserweight’s new album arrives October 7th on Doghouse Records and we couldn’t be happier! One of their new tracks, Balboa, was released recently on Cruiserweight Rocks the Moon along with a cover of American Girl, but will also be on the new BBL full length now available for pre-order at iTunes.
We managed to catch up to Cruiserweight in their hometown of Austin, TX in March and it was one of the most frenetic shows of the SXSW festival this year, right up there with Firewater and The English Beat. I snapped the attached picture at The Rio, a small window into their energetic world, although for the full experience I’d recommend catching them on their current tour. It will take them all over the county starting in Dallas this evening, Sept 30th and I really hope this eventually includes California as well … will travel. [cs]

IR: Detroit #20 – The Shram Band!
September 28, 2008
This episode features an incredible interview and music from The Shram Band! I had the chance to interview Brian Schram (Lead vocals and Guitar) and Jason Heartless (Drums) in Ann Arbor earlier this year when they were opening up for The Dreaming.
This band has a “rock your face off” sound that is tight! Check out the interview, and if you see them coming to your town – go see them live!!
Insomnia Radio #159: FU Robot
September 28, 2008
The year is obviously 2008, not 2005 as the evil announcer at the show header describes. Yes, as you will quickly notice, there is some sort of robotic, computer, and videogame nerdery meshed together unseamlessly in this episode, gladly supplied by this uber-geek.
Seriously, we’ve got some great tracks and a few appearances by DJ’s from last month’s New Media Expo in Las Vegas, not to mention two artists have blood and sun in their names; what are the chances, and could that be an ominous sign? Enjoy and as usual, please help support all the hard-working artists below.

Frightened Rabbit: Head Rolls Off
September 28, 2008
From Selkirk Scotland, we are happy to dish out another track by Frightened Rabbit off The Midnight Organ Fight – the first single from the April release, called Head Rolls Off. The Rabbit have a live album coming out late next month called Liver! Lung! FR! that you should start hearing tracks from shortly. If the two live shows I saw in March are any indication, it should be quite the production and definitely worth picking up.
Beyond the live album, The Rabbit have a new single called I Feel Better that was released on FatCat Records in the UK in the last few days.
Purchase information through IODA Promonet is below, and comes highly recommended from this editor. [cs]

65daysofstatic: I Swallowed Hard Like I Understood
September 25, 2008
Originally formed to try and write music to fit the unreleased and little known John Carpenter flick ‘Stealth Bomber’ starring Kurt Russell. Set over ‘65 Days of Static’ a period of time after some unknown global infrastructure and communications breakdown, it also gave 65 their name.
‘The Fall of Math’ is was the debut album by 65daysofstatic from Sheffield, UK, who meld seamless guitar shapes with ferocious drum ‘n bass styled beats, live drums and c-c-c-computer g-g-g-g-glitch to create a soundtrack to a new dimension – where rock, dance and electronica are equals.
![]() |
Released in Europe in 2004 and Japan in 2005, ‘The Fall of Math’ was heaped with critical praises and championed by BBC radio DJs John Peel and Zane Lowe, among others. It appeared on numerous best of 2004 lists and earned the band recognition as ”one of the few genuine boundary-pushers in contemporary rock music”. The album has now been released in North America on CD and digitally worldwide. With the 2007 release of their 3rd album, The Destruction of Small Ideas’, the band continued to expand their fanbase and attracted the attention of Robert Smith, who invited them to tour North America and Europe with The Cure in 2008. |

Wonkavision: O Ímpar Perfeito
September 24, 2008
The international special of the day is indie power-pop from Brazil, heavy on the moog and sweet audio butter, primarily influenced by such bands such as The Rentals, Cardigans, and Weezer. Wonkavision sings half their songs in Brazilian Portuguese and the other half in English, fluctuating vocal duties between bandmates Will and Manu.
Their first release, Wonkavision received a national award in Brazil for best indie rock album in 2004, and in 2007 they signed to the Tokyo based label PowerPop Academy, releasing an English version of that album in Japan.
Currently they are not touring as Manu and Will have moved to London this year to get their masters degrees, but to make up for it The Wonkas have been releasing a single a month through their MySpace and at least one other online social site. Their main hope is to be able to put these singles together into a full length release by years end.
The Portuguese album can be purchase via their official website, while the one in English can be purchased on iTunes. There are lots of free tracks at Last.FM and their English MySpace as well, although I’m not 100% sure if this song, O Ímpar Perfeito, has been translated over from its native tongue quite yet. [cs]

Waves: Can You Say
September 23, 2008
By IR’s new music reviewer Sarah
Italian band Waves apparently only took 10 days to record their album ‘On Air’, which is astonishing as it comes across as a polished and very well produced work. Their sound is epic and ethereal in equal measures, and the album skips through new-wave, rock, a couple of quiet numbers and some good solid pop. They sing in English, and with the slight hint of an Italian accent leaking through the vocals they have a certain charm that I can’t quite explain – you’ll understand when you hear them!
The song that I was given to review impressed me so much that I immediately hopped over to their MySpace page to hear more. The songs on their album are incredibly diverse, and demonstrate a wide-spanning selection of influences and musical tastes within the band. Not all of it works perfectly, and there is sometimes a feeling that they need to decide on a genre and stick to it. My recommendation – stick to songs like ‘Can You Say’; it’s great pop with a new wave sound, mixed with full bodied vocal harmonies, can’t beat it!
![]() |
‘Can You Say’ really is the pick of the crop, with a great dirty bass line (dirty in a good way!), solid vocals and choppy delayed guitar making it an interesting and very well constructed song. It has the winning combination of simplistic, pretty quiet verses and epic, full choruses made fuller by some synth strings and lots of lovely layers all over the place. But apart from being technically great, it’s just the sort of song you can imagine filling a stadium full of people and sounding bloody amazing! The only negative I have to say about it is that it fades out, which for a song of this quality doesn’t do it justice. But that’s just me!Overall, ‘Can You Say’ is a nice solid chunk of pop/rock loveliness that makes me want to either jump around like a nutter, or sit down quietly to appreciate it – I haven’t quite decided, but that can only be good! |

The Wedding Present: Don’t Take Me Home Until I’m Drunk
September 22, 2008
Three years have passed since seminal UK group The Wedding Present released their last full length masterpiece Take Fountain, after an eight year lull. They are back with the Steve Albini produced El Rey, written by lead singer David Gedge while living in Los Angeles. You can see area mentions on this release to Santa Ana Winds, Hollywood Blvd, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica Blvd and La Brea.
I was first turned onto The Wedding Present in ‘91 when their Albini produced album Seamonsters came out, and was happy to hear they were returning to his production wizardy for ‘El Rey’. tWP played at the Troubadour this last Friday night and I was able to attend with the person who first introduced me to their sound, seventeen years after the fact – a nice reunion of sorts.
The track Dont Take Me Home Until I’m Drunk continues the band’s highlighting of cracked relationships and disappointment with bittersweet abandon. You can pick the track up here through IODA or the entire album over at iTunes. [cs]
