IR: SoCal – April 29th, L.A. Riot [The LAPD Tapes]

April 28, 2008

Looting in L.A.File this under irregular my friends.

Today’s session is basically one continuous experimental half-hour long electronica track, crafted by someone not from the region, and with material apparently taken from the Los Angeles Police Department during the April 29th ’spawned’ L.A. Riots back in 1992.

The performer is actually from the Netherlands and goes by the moniker Zero V. This track is called LA Riot [THE LAPD Tapes], a delicious thirty minute epic produced by the Notorious Twins. This soundscape captures the listener in its droning rhythms, bringing back a sense of urgency and recollection of the vivid local imagery broadcast around the world sixteen years ago to the date.

So open the windows, let the heat flood in, breathe in that smoky L.A. air, throw on your headphones, and take a recollective trip back for better or for worse…

Olaus – Perfect is a Myth

April 27, 2008

Olaus is a guitarist and songwriter who hails from the Chicagoland area and has been writing and performing since before the turn of the millenia. His current full-length album, Abort, features a wide array of songwriting styles and musical palattes encompassing guitar-driven classic rock, dusty sidewalk folk, and bright summertime pop. Featuring instantly memorable melodic hooks and deft phrasings, these are the kind of songs you find yourself humming the next day; songs of a committed craftsman with a core of pure feeling, sung in a pitch-perfect baritone/tenor as expressive as the guitarwork that supports it. These songs are raucous celebrations, heartbreaking elegies, blissful fantasias and savage double-edged accusations, incisive examinations of tattered relationships and enduring friendships, with lyrics that consistently avoid cliche in favor of fresh metaphor and dazzling poetic power, delivered in energetic and passionate live performance.

-Aaron Young

a note from O-

I fluctuate wildly between pride and hatred of this project, which is one of the uderlying themes tying all these tracks together. My indecision. Incapability. Fear of success, fear of commitment, and fear of failure all in one. Abort is my expression of abandonment issues in the abstract; abandonment I have both dealt and felt when dealt to me. Hopefully it’s catchy enough to make up for being such a convoluted pile of… pop.

The band boasts a lush sound that pays homage to Radiohead, Beck, and K’s Choice to name a few, while remaining unique.

The OaKs: Masood

April 25, 2008

The Oaks - Songs for WaitingTheres no fear of the sophomore slump for Orlando-based band The OaKs. Instead, they sound more cohesive and vital than ever. “Masood” is the first single from their brand new album “Songs For Waiting.”

The OaKs were formed by a pair of bandmates (Ryan Costello and Matthew Antolick) from an earlier project, after Ryan returned from a two-year humanitarian stint in Afghanistan, brimming with ideas for songs. The two put together their debut album, “Our Fathers and the Things They Left Behind” with the help of some friends, then evolved into a full 6-piece ensemble for playing live shows. Deeply concerned with making a difference and continuing to help the refugees in Afghanistan, they donated 50% of all proceeds from that album to Global Hope Network, the organization Ryan had worked with there.

With their rich, melodic, unique sound and social consciousness, The OaKs have been garnering national attention and recently were part of the SXSW Music Festival in Austin. Check out our exclusive live video from their headlining showcase at Wave in Austin, TX over on YouTube!

The Raveonettes: Dead Sound

April 24, 2008

This Danish duo [based in New York] have re-emerged with an album that perfectly distills the band’s 60s noir-pop songcraft and fuzz-guitar clamor into a melodic, sensuous voyage through the layers of desire. Showcasing a broader stylistic pallete and a newly cinematic sense of drama, on “Lust Lust Lust”, the band retains the unique, compelling combination of sexy pop songs and rock ‘n’ roll urgency that have made them critics’ darlings. How to Win at Life: Peak of My Physical Beauty

April 22, 2008

How To Win at LifeTodays inspiring new artist rumbles in off Van Nuys Blvd., whipping off potshots of soul-tinged rock, delivering the theme track for your life from atop their funky chariot, and driving a straight line through the arena obstacle course of Jump (Little Children), Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, and Queen similarities … upending all the old musical gladiators in their path. [cs]

Come and get it all right here, right now! This is music for the celebration, the tragedy, the coronation, the beheading, the first coos of romance and for the tearful breakup. This is music for the orgy, for the fast, for the treadmill, for the ascent, for the comedown, for the voyage of the free man and for the kids in the sweatshop. This is music for the icy slap and the gentle caress, for babymaking, euthanasia, barfights, handshakes, chaos, tranquility, friendship, betrayal, and for the birth and eventual ending of all things. This is music for the sluggish, monotonous, apparent meaninglessness of the day, and for the terrible question that hammers you into sweet unconsciousness at night. Make no excuses! We are the beautiful and the ugly, and this we give to you! [HtWaL]

If you like this song, we have thirteen more tracks from a variety of quality Southern California artists you can sample at Insomnia’s The SoCal Sessions newest episode (#22 – “Sun’s Last Drops), from where this How to Win at Life track was pulled. The Black Angels: Doves

April 21, 2008

doves.jpg directions.jpgLast time we met The Black Angels, they were staring into the desert sun somewhere outside of Austin, Texas. Now, two years later, night has fallen and the spirits have come out. It’s time for The Black Angels to provide Directions To See A Ghost [the new album].

The Black Angels’ music alone is enough to invoke spirits. It’s the sound of long nights on peyote, dreams of a new world order, and half-invented memories of the seamy side of ‘60s psychedelia. [IODA]

IR: The SoCal Sessions #22 – Suns Last Drops

April 20, 2008

Davey Latter of Great Northern - Taken by IR: SoCal in HB, CATodays new session is on the heels of a lot of changes across the network. What are they, you ask? Well, I’ve provided a link below if interested, but it boils down to being involved with adding a bit of extra music programming across the network, which you will find on the Daily Dose and Main Feed. You can subscribe to the extra content at those links if interested in hearing what we are up to.

This musical offering is a long time in coming, and is saturated with some incredible tracks, definitely one of my favorite lineups to date from the Southern California region. The name given to the episode comes from a line in Cerulean’s track and is a just a play on drinking coffee right up to the evening, working hard to get this session out… nothing too deep.

I hope you enjoy our selection of fourteen tracks today. We’ve got some excellent local features from Ill Lillies and The Audiants, as well as our friends Sunday Drivers, Lost in Los Angeles, Joshua Lanes and much more!
