IR SoCal Fireside Theatre: Cry Havoc

March 27, 2008

Cry HavocClearing the palette after a complex musical odyssey in Texas, I figured what would be better than heading to a punk show down on the edge of Newport Beach in order to cleanse some of the cloying pretentious hipster residue out of the system, and make my ears finally ring.

Just past midnight on Sunday morning, a friend and I had the pleasure of watching the Huntington Beach/LA based group, “Cry Havoc” assault a local crowd with their fiery punk rock ‘Easter hymns’ in the early morning hours. Can I get a witness?

I had seen this group a few times before, as they were in a battle of the bands I had assisted in judging previously, although every single band from our market lost in the end (pending one last round of wildcard results). Um, not my fault man.

I managed to snap several pictures of the night’s events which you can view over on Flickr. Most are hastily taken during the last two songs, which generally sent the assembled crowd and opening groups up onto the stage, culminating in a ripping cover of Face to Face’s “Disconnected”.

SXSW: Quick Check-in from Austin

March 15, 2008

The SXSW Music Festival has really been an experience unlike no other, with overlapping bands playing in every available space within the space of several city blocks. Its musical gluttony at its finest.

I’m moving into day four of the festival, and honestly having trouble getting ANY blogging or recording done due to my hotel’s proximity away from the downtown area, Austin’s lack of cabs, and the overflowing music menu that was presented to me causing severe ADD.

I’ve forgone all panels, as I’d rather watch music than talking heads, having seen about forty groups over the three days I’ve been here. I’m even debating whether I want to shlep around swag today due to the ridiculous amount of walking that I’ve been doing. Mixed with the heat, and most of the time, alcohol, you are fully exhausted by day’s end.

There are lots of legends here. I ran into John Doe from X yesterday while waiting in line for food, and saw Mick Jones perform yesterday. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Lou Reed are also apparently here, not to mention several groups you might have heard of from the past, such as the UK based The Wedding Present or The English Beat. David Gedge (of tWP) stopped and asked to look at my map a few days back, which was a total trip. I believe he was looking for ‘Oasis’, most likely a street in town, but definitely made me do a double take.

I’ve been spending an hour or two each day laboriously loading the pics of the festival into Flickr from an old laptop that keeps freezing. There is a lot to say, but for now I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Time to go find a cab and see what the final day has in store.

Insomnia Radio, Signing Off

March 13, 2008

This is an emotional post to write, and as such it’s going to be stripped down to the essence. I have battled this decision for awhile, but I have to say goodbye to my show, and to all of you amazing hardcore indie fans, and move on. Hopefully you all realize there is no RIGHT time to do this, just the NECESSARY time.

In the past 3 months I have resigned from what I thought would be a successful business venture for the network and myself, been screwed to the tune of over $20, 000, been handed divorce papers, left home, and lost my beloved grandfather. Yea, this is the distilled version of course…

But as they say, something’s gotta give.

I feel as if I should dedicate 5000 words to defending this decision, I feel I owe that to you. But I’m exhausted, and I’m going to ask that you trust me, that this is literally the only option that feels right in my life. You would think Insomnia Radio would bring me sanity, excitement, comfort, but that’s not the case. And though I DID really enjoy recording the last 2 episodes, I just can’t get that back. So much of what’s happened over the past year with Thimble media has unfortunately spoiled it all for me.

The emails never end, the packages never end, the maintenance never ends, the promotion never ends.

I’ve had my success with the show, and while it’s not monetary, I’m ok with that. It changed lives, literally at times, and propelled many individuals and many bands into better places. Those of you reading this, it’s my sincere hope that it’s had a positive impact on you as well.

Look, it’s not all sour grapes and depressing goodbyes. Our regional shows live on, and now that I feel I can be completely honest with you – two of them deserve to take over my show. IR: SoCal & IR: Chicago. Charles & Kara are ridiculously dedicated, have impeccable taste in music, and have the passion for all of this that I have simply lost. (This isn’t to say our other shows are equally good, but these two are in your face all the time!) You may see their content on the IR proper feed soon. I haven’t decided what to do, but I will say NOT to unsubscribe. I wouldn’t mind grabbing the mic on occasion.

I guess I could go on for pages. Bottom line: Thanks for believing, thanks for listening, thanks for spreading the word. Now, please redirect your attention to several other regional shows who are more than deserving of your ears.

Can’t think of anything else, and this was more difficult than I thought.

Keep it loud, keep it indie, and stay real;

Jason Evangelho

[SXSW] The Von Bondies: Pale Bride

March 11, 2008

vonbondies.jpg

You know, I was going to write something cool, but after reading this from their SXSW bio what else could I say?

The Von Bondies formed in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan at a party house where no one wanted to be the opening act. Says frontman Jason Stollsteimer, “We were having national touring acts play our house for free beer a floor to sleep on and we could never get anyone to go on early. So Don (VB Drummer) and i just started a band to play first. It was called the Baby Killers. i had never even held a guitar.”

That’s just fucking killer!

Check them out @ SXSW at 11:00 PM at Emo’s Annex (600 Red River St).

IR: SoCal – Last Night in Los Angeles

March 11, 2008

The Young PlaythingsIf any of you haven’t noticed all my excessive posts on Twitter yammering on about all the bands playing this year at the South by SouthWest Music Festival in Austin, TX… well… this posting is to confirm it to the rest of all ya’ll. I’m going to Austin this year and tonight is my last night in Los Angeles, well… kinda.

I’ll be flying out solo early tomorrow morning as part of a sorely needed personal trip, that will definitely spill into the Insomnia Radio realm to some degree. I’ve always wanted to attend SXSW but haven’t gotten around to it until now. I guess you could say everything came together at the right time, with an extra side jaunt at the tail end to visit family in the Houston area.

After slogging through about 800 band files the festival has offered online, I’ve compiled an overlapping Read more

Heading to SXSW? Damn, I wish I was! If I was going, I’d be sure to check out The Duke Spirit. This London 5 piece fronted by the OH-SO-HOT Leila Moss is sure to rock the house. Their new album, Neptune, was just released last month so they are riding high and hard to promote it.

Check them out on the first night of SXSW at 1:00 AM @ Buffalo Billiards. (201 E. 6th St.)
