IR: The SoCal Sessions 21 – My DJ Has a God Complex
January 23, 2008
Now, this episode has little to do with the Lord, aside from the fact he brought you the tunes today. Kidding. As far as the wacky intro, it was personally mixed using samples from serious folk with vivid imaginations. Scary, no? Well… maybe not as much as that counterbalancing demonic Fireside promo I stumbled across and stuck in the program.
Breaking our Warped record on episode length, the newest clocks in at a little over an hour and dishes up sixteen diverse and excellent tracks from artists in San Diego, all the way into LA, and onward up the 5 past Southern California’s fringes to Fresno.
Some of the artists just released brand new CDs, such as the very promising and extremely solid full length by upcoming wunderkind 2nd Day Crush, as well as the talented LA based Metro Station; luckily not a recording of station ambience released by the Los Angeles MTA. The latter is at Hot Topic (yeah, I know you all shop there).
There are a record number of local live shows coming up as well, not to mention new national tour schedules starting up by artists like San Diego’s Pensive and Weatherbox. From Aulta at the Alley in Fullerton, to Streets of Rage at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, and 2nd Day Crush at the Key Club in Hollywood, there lots of live local action to choose from to get your year started off properly.
So, after you get your sizable musical fix, we recommend that you cement your own crazy memories at some of the shows listed below. Until next time… IR Bizzach!
Time to lay off the caffeine…

IR: SoCal Spotlight – Manic Automatic w/ “Ruin Me”
January 19, 2008
Fellow Insomniacs,
In Mid-November we brought you a review of a great new band that put in their first public performance at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip here in Los Angeles on 11/15/07.
Well, in December I had the chance to meet up with this new five piece, Manic Automatic, at their rehearsal space near Santa Monica, where they were hashing out three new songs. During a break in the creativity, we were able to ask three of the five band members about the meaning behind their new song ‘Ruin Me’.
Beyond speaking about the song, Evan “EvRock” Brau, Sheldon R. Morley and Baron told us about some new developments, including an upcoming video in the making and an anticipated live date in Hollywood coming very soon.
Today it is with pleasure that we bring you a first look inside Manic Automatic’s new song ‘Ruin Me’, from their self titled seven song EP.

IR: The SoCal Sessions 20 – I Hate You, Rob Crow
January 15, 2008
Todays shortish themed session focuses in on Rob Crow, a San Diego resident who has worked and collaborated with countless quality local groups, and the number counter keeps spinning.
Not only do we feature a track from Pinback’s newest ‘Autumn of the Seraphs’, we have songs from Optiganally Yours, Goblin Cock, Rob’s solo effort, and a extra track from a Scottish band that Pinback just finished up touring with called Frightened Rabbit.
As far as the title of the session; No, we don’t actually have a hatred for Rob. The moniker comes from Rob’s solo CD, ‘Living Well’ (2007), in where his supposed song of self depreciation is located. In case you’d like to take a listen to it, a free link to the file, as well as several of the other songs are housed within.

IR: SoCal Double Shot – The Thieves / 15 North
January 9, 2008
Since we enjoyed doing our previous double shot so much last week, we figured another was in order, this time with two high adrenaline pulsing local rock groups from Los Angeles as well as Murietta.
The first group is a network favorite, The Thieves, a group transplanted from Oxford England, and living in Los Angeles. Sadly, they recently hung up their guitars in October of ‘07, but not without first documenting their infectious live sound in an EP called ‘Where the Bright Lights Bloom’. Apparently it was recorded live in their garage between two years of tourdates, and then mixed at Linda Perry’s studio in North Hollywood, a major step forward in the evolution of their sound and quite a way to go out with guitars blazing.
The second group, a foursome dubbed 15 North, were recently awarded ‘Best High School’ and ‘Local’ group of ‘07 by the Inland Empire Music Awards and one track was enough for us to see why they received this distinct accolade this past year. If you get a chance check out their latest EP called ‘Apex Rock’.
We placed 15 North side by side with The Thieves in this double shot as we felt that if you liked the first, you’d definitely love some another shot of raw rock from these local favorites.
