IR Orlando #21
September 30, 2007
The forecast for episode 21 is slightly mellow for the most part with a touchy of twanginess…
1. Food Will Win The War | Amassed Complications
Their CD, “Dark Mono 3,” is available for purchase at their MySpace page.
Food Will Win the War is based in New York City but is fronted by ex-Central Floridian Rob Ward.
2. The Sugar Oaks | Los Rebeldes
MySpace
As deeply rooted in the Florida soil as their namesake, The Sugar Oaks’ 5-song EP, “Red Grapes in the City,” is available now on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Sony Connect, and Digstation.
3. Terri Binion | Gayleanne (from the 2002 album “Fool” on Richter Records)
Terri has been writing and performing music for many years. You can often catch Terri Binion and the Bible Belt Orphans performing in the Orlando area. She also composed the score for the recent documentary “When Pigs Fly,” which has been making a big splash on the film festival circuit. High demand for the film here in Orlando resulted in a special encore screening and it was the buzz of The Florida Film Festival last spring. More on the film here.
From her MySpace page:
“‘Gayleanne’: Featuring Lucinda Williams, this is the song about a woman I met in Nashville married to an overbearing soul and so very tied to her dream of reaching stardom in a city brimming over with everyone else’s songs.”
BUY: Amazon, iTunes.
4. Go Van Gogh | The Clay We Mold Is New
This Panama City-based solo artist states on his MySpace bio that The Smashing Pumpkins, one of my all-time favorites, made him want to play music.
5. Cinwaves | Sophia
Deerfield Beach duo Cinwaves has released their debut CD. You can purchase Snocap tracks directly from their MySpace page for only 65 cents per song.
6. Shocking Edison | Paranormal Zoo
MySpace
“Scientific Curiosity,” the debut 16 song CD from ProFound Records
Shocking Edison hails from Fort Myers, Florida, the same town that the Thomas Edison had his winter home and laboratory.
7. mini-IR Baltimore: The Thrives | Fall Right Down
Harrisburg, PA
Thanks to Tim and Don for providing this mini-episode of IR Baltimore, featuring The Thrives.
8. Mumpsy | 64 Colors
(from “3 People” on Post*Records)
Long-standing IR Orlando favorite Mumpsy was recently voted 3rd place in the “Best Rock/ Pop Act” category and voted 2nd place in the “Best Indie Rock Act” category of the Orlando Weekly!
9. Recliner NZ | Ugly
Not to be confused with the San Francisco-based band of the same name, this Recliner hails from Auckland, New Zealand. They formed in 2004 and their debut album “Rest Room” was released in New Zealand in 2006 to glowing reviews.
As a result of some very enthusiastic reviews from GarageBand.com members, “Ugly” was Track of the Day at GarageBand.com. For 24 hours on Saturday, the 1st of September, 2007 “Ugly” it was featured on GarageBand.com’s Alternative Pop front page.

THE AGGROLITES:
We are all devastated by the loss of our dear friend and bandmate Dave Fuentes. We are extremely honored to have played with Dave during his last days. Dave was a big influence on every one of us for years, and for him to join us onstage and call himself an Aggrolite meant the world to us.
No one will ever be able to play bass like Dave, it came so easy to him and his technique is untouchable. Dave will definately go down in history as the greatest ska bass player of our generation. Onstage he was a star and you couldn’t take your eyes off of him, but once he came down off the stage, he was a regular guy just smiling and having a good time. Dave was so friendly that everywhere we went, he was talking to people- whether it was fans at a show, or the employee at a gas station. He was truely an inspiration both musically and in life.
We all had a nickname for him - “Wisdom Dave” because he was always full of insight and helpful advice. He set an example as a man, as a friend, a husband and as a father. He never had anything bad to say about anyone. Every night on tour at 8:00, we would be able to spot Dave somewhere in the corner of a venue, or in the dressing room on the phone saying goodnight to his children and his wife. We couldn’t drive by a shopping center without Dave stopping to look for gifts for his wife and children.
Our hearts go out to his wife and children as well as the rest of his family, and to our brothers in Hepcat. Dave is loved and cherished by so many people… we miss you already Dave. ‘
Till we meet again “Aggro-Cat.”
Rest in peace.

IR: The SoCal Sessions 17 - Plastic Makes It Possible
September 17, 2007
Today’s session is almost entirely electronic in theme and heralds in several new albums from locals, including a new full length effort by the LA based electronica duo, ‘Techno Squirrels’, called ‘Plastic Makes It Possible’.
The name comes from the reality that plastic is a critical and dependent part in creating music, from the computers that generate the songs to the creation of the CDs themselves. While beneficial in that sense, it also poisons the environment and adversly affects one of the group members who suffers from an illness that is related to petro-chemical plastics. Apparently the title is also a reference to the 50’s mindset of ‘Better Living Through Chemicals’, hence the fun plastic nature of the stance on the front of the album cover. Tupperware party anyone?
We have also put together an amazing collection of local electronica artists with a few hybrid artists, culminating after several months of listening and selecting our current favorites in the genre. Thanks again go out to all of them for letting us share their music here with you. The carefully constructed track listing of tonight’s hour long show (which connects quite a bit better in the late evening hours) is as follows:

Canon @ Union Station (Free Show - 9/8/07)
September 7, 2007
From the actual LA Underground:
Go Metro to see progressive rock band Canon on Saturday, Sept. 8 starting at 8 p.m. in an environmental event to be held at Union Station’s Old Ticket Room. Only those people using the Metro system and showing a valid Metro pass, Metro Rail ticket, or proof of Metrolink fare will be admitted to the free concert.
Metro’s partnership with Los Angeles-based Canon is a unique opportunity to promote public transit and draw attention to environmental concerns through Canon’s music by rewarding Metro patrons with a free evening of entertainment in a distinctive, transit friendly venue. At the concert the band will debut “The Hourglass,” a song dedicated to raising environmental awareness.
“We are honored to have been chosen by Metro to help raise awareness on alternative, more efficient ways to protect our environment through our music. About 5.7 billion gallons of fuel are wasted due to congestion in the United States’ largest cities. More and more commuters are realizing that Metro is the way to go not only to save time and money but to protect our planet,” said Jason Turbin, Canon’s front man.
It’s easy to get to Union Station on Metro and Metrolink. The Metro Red, Purple and Gold Lines, numerous Metro buses, and Metrolink trains culminate at Union Station. For customized routing information use the Metro Trip Planner at www.metro.net or call 1-800-C-O-M-M-U-T-E.
