IR Chicago Is Coming Back!
July 31, 2007
IR Chicago’s last show was LAST YEAR, and for those of you who felt like it was just starting to get good – I feel your pain.
Corey had to move on, but at long last, a noble music fan and Chicago native is taking up the reigns soon…
Hopefully you haven’t unsubscribed, we’ve got work to do.

IR: The SoCal Sessions 15 – Come on Vacation, Leave on Probation
July 28, 2007
Dear listener,
Due to some unexplained technical sabotage, we had to scrub our listener’s choice classic opera and romantic standards program, unfortunately funded by you, our Opera Gold Club VIP members.
In its place we bring you the next best thing: twelve tracks of Southern California hip-hop ready to audibly slap you about the head for the next hour as a reward for funding such an aberration.
In all seriousness, we’ve got some great intelligent tracks lined up. While I’m not
a self-proclaimed expert on the genre I do enjoy listening to a wide variety of music, so figured you might enjoy a break from the rock for just a bit.
As far as my introduction to the genre, well… it was probably around ‘85 or ‘86 when a portion of my older brother’s listening habits (LL Cool J/Whodini/LA Dream Team), and stories (the Run DMC riot in Long Beach) rubbed off on me to some degree.
Anyway, I’ve searched far and wide for the following artists and I hope you enjoy all the tracks we have today. We’d love to hear any statements of how or when you started listening to the genre, if so inclined. Also, please support an artist or three if you like what you hear. They’d love to hear from you.
(slight correction in session: electronica show will be in late August or early Sept.)

IR: San Francisco #47 – The John Sellers Interview
July 25, 2007
Last week I had the incredible fortune to sit down for a couple of hours and innumerable pints with John Sellers , the author of the hilarious, frank, and amazing book Perfect From Now On: How Indie Rock Saved My Life . In the interview, we discuss his book, indie music over the past 25 years, and our mutual obsession over Dayton, Ohio, band Guided By Voices. To round out the interview, I chose six tracks (not five as I stupidly said in the intro), all of which are reminiscent of the type of music that GBV recorded throughout their long and storied history.
If you like what you hear, check out the bands in this week’s episode, check out GBV’s back catalogue (sad to say, they’re now defunct), and by all means: BUY THIS BOOK!

IR Orlando #20
July 22, 2007
Hello and welcome to an episode which finds us spanning many genres. This also marks the one-year anniversary of the Insomnia Radio Orlando podcast, and hopefully there will be many more to come!
1. The Dark Romantics | She’s A Fire | MySpace
From their newest album “Some Midnight Kissin’” on Lujo Records. They are currently on tour with The Mooney Suzuki, and list dates in July and August in Texas, North & South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and all over Florida. Courtesy of the band and IODA Promonet.
2. 20WT | Out My Window
These guys grew up in the deep south listening to Pantera and Bob Marley and have combined groove metal and roots reggae to form a genre they call “rocksteady metal.” They originated in Key Largo and later moved to Jacksonville. You can purchase their new CD “Out My Window” directly from their MySpace page.
3. mini TLP show featuring Tailgunner Joe & The Earls of Slander | The Street
This is a short feature from Insomnia Radio’s TLP show focusing on Tampa’s Tailgunner Joe & The Earls of Slander. If you live in Florida, mark your calendar for Thursday, August 9!!! There will be a live TLP/Insomnia Radio showcase at the Crowbar in Ybor City, featuring Tailgunner Joe and the Earls of Slander, The Embassy, Vox Palma, The Love Affair, and Brer.
4. Holidaysburg | (You’ve Got) A Friend in Pennsylvania
This is Orlando-based Holidaysburg’s 2nd appearance on IR Orlando. This song is from their 2005 release “A Better November.” According to their MySpace page, they are currently for a bassist, so if you fit the bill, check their blog entry for details.
5. Chase Coleman | Fade to Grey
Chase spent some time touring in Europe, where his band had a top 20 radio hit, and he returned home to the U.S. in 2004 to work on his solo career. This is the title track from his debut album, which will be available soon.
6. Rayko KRB | Charp | MySpace
This artist from Miami has been quite a bit of play on podcasts and Sirius satellite radio in the past year. His first full-length CD, “The Rockstar Poor LP” came out July 4. You can order it from his website.
7. Derek Stroker | Lose Control | MySpace
Altho he started out as a drummer, Derek quickly became proficient at guitar, bass and piano. He has a 6 song “Acoustic EP” is available now at iTunes and CD Baby, and a brand new album called “Take a Picture, Make a Promise…”. Derek recently relocated to Nashville.
8. Fairweather Friend | What a Realist Would Say
Fairweather Friend has been heard on my show before, and this song is a sneak preview of their new album. They are nearly finished with their debut LP and expect to release it later this year. They recently played at the Florida Music Festival too.
9. Matt Mackey | One Last Cigarette
Matt should be settled in Orlando by the time this show is released, having just relocated from Lynchburg, VA. This song is from “Live at the Mezzanine” and you download some tracks from him at www.virb.com/mattmackey and you can also purchase the CD via his MySpace page.

IR: San Francisco #46 – Alternate Takes
July 19, 2007
On this week’s show, I feature alternate takes of four tracks. The bands may have originally recorded these as demos and then later fleshed them out for full-lengths, or they just wanted to take the songs in a different direction. Whatever the reason, I hope you enjoy this unique episode.
I also am joined by my cohost, Miguel of the TLP. I neglected to talk about the TLP during the show as initially promised, so check out the link to their site to find out what they’re all about.

IR: The SoCal Sessions #14 – Well… Slap My Ass and Call Me Catorce
July 15, 2007
Mini-Novela Catorce:
Episode fourteen receives a Bitter:Sweet slap and enters the world on an electronic wave of bossa nova followed by a live Jazz Bakery performance by sweltering vocalist, Sara Gazarek.
Leo from the TLP show interviews rockin’ Florida artists Tailgunner Joe & The Earls of Slander, followed up with the Red Elvises belting out a fifties sounding romp about a devil woman on their ridiculously large Siberian guitars… very fun stuff.
Resident house band for the dead and damned, Serenading the Dead brings us their style of burlesque/vaudville music with a Zeppelin-esque classic that slides into Chance’s ‘Time Travel’, a beautiful foray into headphone polished sound, perfect for a night of self-reflection into the past or possibly even the future (with the right spirits in hand).
Oliver Future arrives from Austin, capturing the feeling of being transplanted to LA, with the bouncing ‘Happiness Machine’. We join up again with Yellow Thunder Woman and Robert Davey of the Bastard Fairies, listening to their Venomous Tale of deception, neccesity and love. The mid-July block party ends with Jubilee from the Willowz, definitely best heard while watching the Toben Seymour video filmed in LA… a light show putting the old Lazerium and Disney shows to shame.
The session ends with Ben Brooks & The Anger peforming ‘Bend’, a multi-layered demo that immediately captured our attention. We hope you enjoy these great songs and we will see you soon for a friends of the family type segment.
Adios los Bastardos.

IR: The SoCal Sessions – “Insomnia is Warped – Mixtape ‘07″
July 1, 2007
In anticipation of the Warped Tour launching through Southern California this weekend, we figured it was time to compile a straight-forward hour-long collection of tracks, with artists from Michigan, Florida, Philly, Tennessee, Utah, Canada and many more locales..
The last Warped Tour I attended was in Chicago in the late 90’s, although it looks like you still have some of the same core bands. The sound has definitely changed to a large degree from that time frame, but there fortunately are still some solid groups to be found. The following is just a small sampling of those performing at various junctures of the tour, including “I Am Ghost” from Long Beach, “Pistolita” from San Diego, “Bad Religion” and “Fishbone” (LA), neighbors “Escape the Fate” from Las Vegas and “The Matches” and “Nothington” from the Bay Area:
