IR: The SoCal Sessions #12 - Light After Dark
May 21, 2007
Starting us off on an eerie welcoming note, the ‘Mississippi Mudsharks’ rise again with a darkly polished new album of originals, and lead the charge from the Devil’s Road toward LA. This is where we find the incredible solo artistry of local author ‘Henry Baum’ with his project ‘Ash Tree’, as well as the indie lounge musings of ‘Ren Stewart’ and her incredible backing band. Check out the violin work and what sounds like sultry xylophones.
Next, three of LA’s best kept secrets, ‘The Weather Underground’, ‘The Black Watch’, and ‘Moving to France’ will no doubt blast your senses and make you clambor towards their websites looking for a longer rock fix. Advice: Succumb to your desires.
‘Killola’ finishes up their 10 day England tour and returns to the US victorious in satisfying the masses across the pond, while Eloise works on their debut album and help stave off our pleading for an advance copy (bringing us to our knees with electric kazoo mastery).
We find ourselves sliding towards summer with the sounds of ‘Willie Herath’ as well as two of the artists he lists as influences, ‘The Mother Hips’ & ‘Don McCloskey’ (with backing by California’s gold: ‘Slackstring’). Yes, can you feel it?
A yearbook summer approaches!

IR: SoCal Point Blank #1 - Fight From Above
May 6, 2007
This last night I met up with Suzy of the new Cognitive Collective music site, deep in the jungles of Tarzana at a legendary strip mall style venue where the excellent LA based rock group, Fight From Above happened to be playing.
Fight from Above has just released their new six song EP entitled ‘It’s Just Something to Say’ which you can pick up at CD Baby here. Also, if you are in the area you can check them out at the Roxy on May 18th. The song featured here is entitled ‘East Coast’, the 5th track off their new six song EP.
Also, for those of you wondering about how Coachella ‘07 went, here’s an intro from Suzy’s first hand account over at the Cognitive Collective site:
“Once again, Coachella Music and Arts Festival has come and gone and this festival goer is still left in the clouds! If you have not yet had the pleasure to attend one, I highly recommend checking it out next year. I am sure you will find yourself attending again each year after!
The thing that kept impressing me this year was how huge this event has gotten! Coachella Valley really has become the hot spot for festivals, and being a part of it each year, watching it grow, is a real treat. The global representation this year was phenomenal! So much talent from all over the world. And so many fans traveled to Indio to endure the blistering heat while they enjoyed the tunes from their favorite bands, and discovered new ones to take with them when they return home. Out of the many I met, only two lived in America!”

Yes, it’s been almost 3 weeks - but I’ve been busy interviewing more bands, receiving submissions from bands, and listening to the great Detroit music to put out on this podcast!
This episode features an interview I did with The Nice Device at the Lager House back in Feb of 2007 - and 2 more great songs by The Nice Device!
Also, music from: Season High, Exit The Ordinary, Jerry And The Suits, and a special track from John Bros (played on episode #5) that was recorded in the 90’s that you may have heard on Dr. Demento’s radio show!
