IR: San Francisco #34 – Music for a Mellow, Rainy Day
February 25, 2007
Six solo artists & one ensemble. Seven tracks that lean toward the mellower side of music. Seven wonderful reasons to listen to this new episode of Insomnia Radio: San Francisco. Inside. On a rainy day in late winter. Curled up on the couch with an adult beverage. And the lights down low.
Regrettably, this is only the first time I’ve ever included direct links to the artists’ music (other than their webpages). So I do hope you use them in support of the artists. Enjoy, my friends.

In celebration of the launch of Dread at the Controls this week, we are pleased to bring you eight tracks in the ska, rocksteady, and reggae vein, with a few ‘hybrids’ thrown in for good measure.

I’m pleased to present you with this month’s spotlight on Asian Man Records. Run by Mike Park for well over a decade, Asian Man consistently turns out great independent music and has been the stepping stone for many an indie band on their way to success. Many thanks go to Mike for allowing me to feature his label and to the bands as well. If you enjoy what you hear on this show, be sure to send Mike some love (links below).

IR: The SoCal Sessions #6 – Rocking the Jazzbah
February 11, 2007
We’ve got an assortment of superb tracks for you in this session, starting with a blast of rock-oxygen from the Kristin Hersh fronted group, 50 Foot Wave, and ending on a jazzy tear jerker, “Yours” from LA muse Sara Gazarek, dedicated to all the Bitter(wo)men Club Members out there.
Continuing onward from the Vena Cava we move forward with the unique vocal harmonies of Agoura Hills resident Beth Garbo singing “The Key”, followed by the firing rock anthem ‘In Your Place’ by LA rock group Immune. Next, four man group, Gertie Fox kindly provides us with an excellent new track, “Dancing on Paper” that’s not even fully unwrapped yet.
Letters Burning, Fight from Above, and Chance come back for the tightest sound check you’ve ever heard as they prepare for their respective rock shows at the Gig in Hollywood, and the Switchblade Kittens prepare us for a Valentines Day Massacre with the electrifying sounds of their Bassola, Bassorama, and the funkily spelled Drumbass. Meow.

IR Orlando #15: The Lakeland Edition
February 11, 2007
I started out with a slightly different playlist for this episode, then realized that more than half of the bands were from Lakeland, Florida (which is about midway between Orlando and Tampa). At the last minute, I decided to make it an all-Lakeland show. I’m certain that we’re just scratching the surface, but here are 3 great Lakeland artists for you to enjoy.
1. SemiSoul | Charlie’s Untitled
Lakeland-based SemiSoul has a 3-song EP out. They have plenty of upcoming shows all around Florida, including Lakeland, Ybor City and New Port Richey. If you’re listening in Orlando, check their MySpace page frequently for Orlando shows – they just played The Social and will making some more appearances here soon.
2. Timothy Simpson | The New Year
3. Timothy Simpson | Daydream
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear Timothy for the first time recently. His new album ‘all for One’ (on Willowbrooke Records) is available on iTunes.
4. The Dark Romantics | Another Song For Another Night (from ‘Some Midnight Kissin”)
5. The Dark Romantics | Let’s Get Explosive (iTunes exclusive)
MySpace
I’ve been dying to play this band for a while, so I hope you enjoy them! Their CD release party for ‘Some Midnight Kissin”’ (on Lujo Records) will be at Back Booth in Orlando on Feb. 15, then they have a slew of tour dates throughout Florida, and including stops in Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

IR: San Francisco #32 – All You Need Is Love
February 3, 2007
I’m back from an (unexpected) break away from the show, but hopefully the music will have been worth the wait. Up for you this week is a ton of content, including seven killer tracks from the Bay and beyond (three of the bands’ names have the word “love” in them). Also included: a new promo/trailer, new intro, new closer, and plenty of silliness.
