Mates of State: Goods
November 24, 2005
Mates of State is the organ and drums, vocal-laden duo of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel. Formed in the nation’s heartland in December of 1997, their infectious songs and long-standing motto of play anywhere, anytime has earned them a legion of fans from coast to coast and everywhere else in between.
After years of playing in countless bands (nearly twenty between the two of them), Kori and Jason finally realized the ease of playing with only one other person. Ditching their guitars for just an organ and drum set, the trick now was getting two people to sound like a full band. With the two instruments, they added call and response vocal melodies and harmonies to create a sound unique in its immenseness. An open-mic was scheduled and tensions ran high as they began to question their untraditional arrangement. Afterwards, they realized it didn’t matter.
In November of 2004, Mates of State released the All Day EP and Two Of Us, a behind-the-scenes DVD documentary. Four tracks of spunky organ and drums, All Day includes the delightful “Goods” and a cover of the David Bowie classic “Starman.” [polyvinyl records]

Decibully: Penny, Look Down
November 23, 2005
Featuring numerous multi-instrumentalists and having earned a strong reputation for their live performances, Milwaukee’s DECIBULLY brandishes a wide variety of influences, mixing a rich blend of finely interspersed layers tinged with country-esque flourishes, subtle electronic twinges, and rock undertones.
Formed as a trio in Fall 2001 by William J. Seidel (vocals, guitar, percussion, Rhodes), W. Kenneth Siebert (guitar) and Nick Westfahl (keyboards), the group soon added Ryan Weber (lap steel, synths, guitar, percussion), Justin Klug (bass), and Jason Gnewikow (drums) to further round out their sound. Decibully spent the rest of 2001-02 practicing, touring and self-releasing their debut album You Might Be A Winner, You May Be A Loser, But You’ll Always Be A Gambler.
Sing Out America!, released on March 8, 2005, was Decibully’s third album, and the first to be written entirely by the band as a cohesive septet from start to finish. Although more stylistically varied than previous albums, the continuity of Sing Out America! reflects the consistency that can only be found by a band spending so much time on the road together. Sing Out America! is the most representative work the band has turned in to date, bringing their recorded output in step with their live show. [bio]

Braid: Please Drive Faster
November 21, 2005
Urbana IL, United States (1993 – 1999)
Braid was a post-hardcore band from Urbana, Illinois that formed in 1993. After forming, the band went through several line-up changes but eventually settled on: Bob Nanna on vocals and guitar, Todd Bell on bass, Chris Broach on guitar and vocals and Roy Ewing on drums. Roy was replaced in 1997 by Damon Atkinson. In 1999 Braid disbanded and went on to form Hey Mercedes with all band members minus Chris Broach (who went on to form The Firebird Band) and adding Mark Dawursk.
The band reformed for a US/Canada/Japan tour in 2004 and, now that Hey Mercedes are defunct, apparently intend to tour sporadically. It is not yet known if Braid will be recording any more material. [last.fm]

Winter Circle: Streetlight Flicker
November 16, 2005
WINTER CIRCLE has grown from being a local Oklahoma City favorite to a nationally known, energetic, hook filled rock band.
“Streetlight Flicker”, the electrifying follow-up to “Don’t Go”, managed to outperform the lead single on the debut. It’s a breathtaking piece of heartfelt pop-punk balladry. “Don’t Go” and “Streetlight Flicker” became the twin templates for the scalding recordings on Winter Circle’s debut EP.
The Huge And Hopeful captures both the dynamic energy of the quartet’s performances and the optimism of their stance. Recorded at Reeltime Audio in Denton, Texas by Grammy-winning producer Eric Delegard (Bowling For Soup, Edgewater, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Radial Angel), the EP establishes the group as at once a leading light of modern Oklahoma rock and a band bursting at the walls of their local scene, fully ready for national recognition.
“Winter Circle is catchy indie-pop at its best. Best, I tell you! Go check them out now, before I light your car on fire.”- Jason Evangelho

Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s: Skeleton Key
November 11, 2005
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s is an 8-piece indie-pop/orchestral pop band from Indianapolis, Indiana. As previous members of Archer Avenue, The Academy, Smart Milk, and Pravada, Margot have recently signed to Artemis Records and their debut album, “The Dust of Retreat,” was re-released in March 2006.
While the band, and Richard specifically have given many explanations to the band’s name; this is all in fun. As the name was created as an anti-name; not meant to have any real meaning, just to make fun of other ridiculous names. [last.fm]

Meeky Rosie: Forever
November 4, 2005
Meeky Rosie are a band based in Devon, South West England, UK whose members became friends while studying at the University of Plymouth. They recently finished writing and recording their debut album on the banks of the River Dart in Devon, working with cutting edge producer Max Heyes for the last several months. The album is currently being mixed at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios by Tchad Blake and Alan Moulder and is slated for an October 2006 release date.
You may have heard of them due to their recognition for their contribution to the U.S. documentary film “Who Killed the Electric Car?”, as this song “Forever” was used as the documentary’s main track. [wiki]
Editor’s Note: Unfortunately after recording their debut album and completing the mixing their record label was not prepared to invest any more money to release and promote the album. Meeky Rosie has now disbanded, although did announce they were recording as recently as 2007 on their MySpace page.
